Chapter Philanthropy

A large part of our commitment to Kappa Kappa Gamma involves giving back to our sisters and to the community. Kappas volunteer their time once a week to read to the 1st graders at Emerson Elementary, an elementary school near campus in order to support the mission of our national philanthropy, Reading is Fundamental. Every fall, in order to raise money for Reading is Fundamental, Kappa plans and hosts “Kappa Karaoke” in our courtyard, where we invite singers and dancers to perform on stage for their peers. Every spring, we also have a joint barbeque philanthropy event in our courtyard with UC Berkeley Sigma Chi in order to raise money for both our philanthropies.

In addition, UC Berkeley Kappas are extremely active in supporting and participating in Jog for Jill, a 5K run/walk that raises money for the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation. This particular philanthropy is extremely important to us Kappas, because Jill Costello, who the 5K run is put on for, was a UC Berkeley Kappa herself. Along with being extremely active in our organization, she served as a Varsity coxswain for Cal Women’s Crew and UC Berkeley’s Panhellenic Vice President. She passed away from lung cancer just a month after graduating from UC Berkeley with a 4.0 GPA. Cal Kappas are extremely dedicated in supporting the legacy of one of our sisters.

Kappas at Cal also love participating in the philanthropic events held by various fraternities and sororities in our Greek system. We have a strong track record in performing well and contributing significantly to organizations that we may otherwise never get to support.
